National and local media have recently been reporting on reasons why more blood donors from Black and Asian communities are urgently needed. There is a rise in demand for the rare Ro blood subtype, which is mainly found in Black people. There will be a list of blood donation events around the UK due to the rise in demand for this rare blood type.
You might have heard about the sad death of 19 year old Richard Okorogheye earlier in March this year. He was an Oxford Brookes student who suffered from sickle cell disorder. Richard’s family was devastated and because of this, a group of blood campaigners have come together to launch a campaign entitled “Bonded By Blood: A Mother’s Story”.
About the blood donation campaign
Bonded By Blood: A Mother’s Story is a national campaign of blood donation events due to be launched in September during World Sickle Cell Month. The aim is to encourage more black people to donate blood. We will be amplifying the need for more black blood donors to come forward.
The campaign will share stories of other mothers with children who receive regular blood transfusions. We are working with mothers from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol and the following dates and venues have so far been confirmed. You will have the opportunity to do something absolutely awesome by becoming a blood donor, thus saving lives.
